All the socials, all the information, all the advice. Now, don't get me wrong. I myself give advice and also look at other moms for advice. I love watching YouTube videos of homeschooling moms, to get some inspiration and help along the way. However, through the many years of homeschooling I have noticed one big flaw in this process. There seems to be a filter placed on homeschooling. The beautifully painted walls, with the matching rug with the alphabet on it, posters hung up gracefully along the walls for each subject. There are even curriculums which give a picture of homeschooling, which in many ways doesn't reflect reality. Homeschooling can be fun, engaging, enriching, easy, affordable and all the good things. But homeschooling is one thing most people leave out - HARD!

Homeschooling is FUN!
That in of itself is true to a certain degree. After over a decade of homeschooling, I can probably count the number of FUN days we've had. Most of our days are filled with WORK and it's not easy to get children on the same page with you when all they want to do it play. Now, of course I incorporate fun elements of school throughout the school year, especially in the younger years, but as they get older that "fun" element quickly diminishes.
We must look at the end goal, and that isn't to have a fun day, that is to raise responsible, successful adults.
It's extremely important to note however, the importance of play when a child is younger. Which leads to my next point "Children learn through play"

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, right? There is truth in that, and we should recognize that! There is actually so much importance in play in school. Learning can be fun, and I am not dismissing that. However, the objective should not be fun. The objective should be learning whether it is fun or not.
I am currently homeschooling a 10th grader, a 4th grader and I have a toddler, and the amount of "fun" they have during their lessons they will probably tell you is very little.
As my oldest sits through her Algebra 2 class, oh what fun it is to find the square root of x-y.

Those beautifully painted walls, with perfect cub shelves and matching bins. Posters lined up, with a matching rug and white IKEA desks. Oh, that looks like perfection doesn't it. Once that is attained then what? Sometimes we can look at videos of influencers homeschooling and crave what they have. Oh, if only I had that desk my children's books would be sorted well, and they can work more efficiently. Those are all lies. We have been through desk after desk after desk. We've had all the cube shelving with bins and books lined up to our heart's desires. And we still end up at the kitchen table! Because that's where all the magic happens it seems. Our breakfast nook table is filled with books, pens and pencils and I can tell you right now it is NOT aesthetically pleasing! I have fell into the trap of buying all the homeschooling "equipment" the pencil caddy for the middle of the table, cute accessories, and I have wasted money in the process. Remember, the most important thing is going to be what you and your family need for homeschooling. All the pretty glammy things, while amazing as they can be, do not necessarily make homeschooling easier. Sometimes a dollar pencil case works better that a twenty-dollar pencil caddy. For me now, I opt for good stationery and call that a day!
