Tart Cherry Turnovers

Turnovers, commonly made with puff pastry dough, is a type of pastry that are filled with either sweet or savory fillings. There are many different fillings you can use, apple, cherry, peaches you name it.

In this particular recipe we are using cherry, one my of favorite fillings. To make the cherry filling we will be using tart canned cherries, and store-bought puff pastry for the dough, which makes this super easy to put together.

Even though these can be used for desserts, they do make an excellent sweet treat for breakfasts, especially when served alongside a cup of coffee or tea.

Cherries! Tart, yet sweet, fully of flavor, bite yet tender. When I typically buy turnovers from the grocery store, I would get the cherry ones. They are bursting with flavor and have the right balance between sweet and tang. That's why when making them at home, a cherry turnover was definitely something I needed to recreate.

As soon as I found canned tart cherries, I was super excited to make this filling. The first time I got these cherries was to make a cherry pie, then I was so happy that I can use those same cherries for homemade cherry turnovers.

Which is exactly what I did! The ingredients are very basic and simple, once you can find the canned cherries. The steps are pretty straightforward, it's simple to make and we are getting the help from using store bought puff pastry.

Crunchy, crispy exterior, with and extra crunch from sugar granules. Center is sticky and sweet and tart pairs perfectly with the buttery crunch of the pastry.

These portable little pies, made with flaky pastry get its' name from the way the dough is turned over onto itself to form either a triangle or half mooned shape.

Now a typical pie crust can be used in this recipe, however it's not the more common way to these. Typically puff pastry is used, and that's what we will be using today.

The heart of any turnover is its' filling. In this recipe we will be using cherries, but you can do apples, peaches or other fruits. The filling it made with cooking down out cherries, adding our sugar some extracts for extra flavor and then thickened with corn starch. You can also use potato starch to thicken this if that's something you have on hand.

After we have filled our dough and turned them over, an egg wash can be applied. You will whisk one egg with a splash of water to create the egg wash. After you have applied the egg wash you can sprinkle sugar on top to give that extra layer of sweetness and crunch.
